Four Myths You Need to Forget before You Start a Franchise
There are common misconceptions regarding franchising that may produce some unrealistic expectations for those looking to start their own business. In this article we will disprove four common myths about franchising, and provide some practical advice and tips to help you decide if franchising is right for you.
Myth #1
You don’t have to do any work before a franchise is granted. Franchisors don’t hand out licenses to everyone who applies. Instead, you have to impress a potential franchisor with a detailed business plan to take advantage of a franchise opportunity. A significant amount of time and research would need to be dedicated to a comprehensive business plan. You will need to look at: Your franchisor’s history The number of franchises in the company The overall financial performance of the franchisor – including an in-depth look at the best and worst-performing franchises The franchisor’s litigation history The franchisor’s advertising budget How the industry as a whole is expected to perform in the future.
Myth #2
Owning a franchise is all about picking the right name. If you think that running a successful franchise simply means getting onboard with a well-known company – like McDonalds or Midas – you are mistaken. Sure, brand recognition is important, but it isn’t the only factor that makes for a profitable franchise.
Myth #3
You can be on “auto pilot” and let the higher-ups do the thinking. Your franchise agreement will include a list of do’s and don’ts, however that doesn’t mean that you can simply kick back and let your franchisor manage your business. While your franchisor may have the ultimate say in big decisions – like how you market to customers and what kind of training manuals you use for new employees – it is still up to you to manage the day-to-day operations of your franchise. It will be your responsibility to recruit good employees, ensure they are properly trained, and that your customers see you as reliable and trustworthy.
Myth #4
Franchising offers worry-free, instant money. No matter how great your business plan, you will not turn a profit on day one. In fact, it may take you weeks or even months to get out of the red and into the black. There are no guarantees, it doesn’t matter how successful your franchisor has been, if you don’t work hard you will not achieve your goals.
