Mortgage Choice hosts third working beyond cancer workshop

August 10, 2011

In Australia, approximately 114,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year, which equates to 2,192 per week, 313 per day and 13 per hour*.

Many are confronted with the reality of uncomfortable treatments and a long recovery period, often while juggling the needs of family, friends and a career. This can lead to challenges in that taking necessary time away from work to focus on their health can hinder their career strides.

To help those affected by cancer during this time, Cancer Council NSW once again partnered with Mortgage Choice to host the third in a series of free 'Working Beyond Cancer' workshops.

The half-day events help educate those who are keen to return to their job yet are unsure of their rights or how to deal with the transition back into the workforce. Their supporters and carers also benefit greatly from the wealth of information and stories shared on the day.

The latest workshop, held at Mortgage Choice's head office in North Sydney on Saturday 6 August 2011, was open to cancer patients, survivors, carers, employers and work colleagues.

Annie Miller, Cancer Council NSW Survivor Programs Coordinator, is thankful for the partnership.

"We are appreciative of the support Mortgage Choice regularly provides, particularly its staff who volunteer their time to assist with these events. Without the helping hand we wouldn't be able to cater to the number of people who require this kind of information and support," said Ms Miller.

"Together we are able to help more people return to work equipped with the knowledge that may help them overcome any emotional and communication challenges, legal and financial issues, plus exercise and healthy lifestyle concerns. We have had a great deal of enthusiastic feedback from the workshops and look forward to collaborating again with Mortgage Choice."
