It's time to pack up your belongings and call in the removalists. Sometimes it’s only when we move that we realise how much stuff we’ve managed to collect! Rather than take all your possessions along to your first home, why not sort out those things you want and those you really don't need?
Cash in on unwanted things, or donate them to charity
Hold a garage sale or even advertise a few items on websites like eBay or the Trading Post to convert your clutter into cash. Alternatively, you could donate your unwanted items to a local charity.
Prepare a moving day kit
Put aside a box of essentials that you’ll need on the big day – cleaning products, light bulbs, toilet paper, garbage bags, a change of clothes, your toiletry bag, etc.
Get off on the right foot
Let your neighbours know you’ll be moving in, and make sure your removal van doesn’t block anyone’s driveway.
Hire a removalist
You can contact the Australian Furniture Removers Association for services in your area. Alternately ask friends, family or work mates for feedback on any companies they have used. Always get a written quote before going ahead with a professional removalist.
Have utilities ready to go
Remember to arrange for utilities (phone, power, internet, water etc) to be connected in your new home prior to moving in. Give plenty of notice to your current utility providers that you will be closing the account otherwise you could face unnecessary bills. Also, contact the Post Office to organise redirection of mail to your new home.
Protect your valuables
Insure anything that’s valuable or breakable if you’re using a moving company. Also, back up your files if you’re moving a computer, just in case anything happens to it.
Look after your movers
Make sure you have either hot or cold drinks on hand to keep your movers going!
