A Hinterland gem
I moved to Palmwoods about 9 years ago now, to be closer to my parents, who live nearby. It was out of necessity that I moved here however I've grown to love this sleepy “country-town” like suburb.
Palmwoods is a great place to raise a family which makes sense, given almost half it’s population is made up of couples with children.
It’s location is good too, being about 10 minutes from the Bruce Highway should you need to travel to Brisbane for work or perhaps the airport. A short 20 minute drive over Kiels Mountain and you’re at the Sunshine Coast airport.
Being a beach girl, it’s also about 20 minutes into Cotton Tree or Mooloolaba beaches and also to our shopping hub, Sunshine Plaza.
Palmwoods has it’s own State School which from parents in the area, seems like a great option. It’s also central to a number of great Private Schools like Suncoast Christian College (which my daughter attends), Sunshine Coast Grammar and Nambour Christian College.
Over the last 9 years i’ve seen Palmwoods change from a sleepy little village into a thriving hinterland town.
Of course we’ve always had the obligatory country pub, and a few fab coffee shops, but Rick’s Diner which has undergone a massive transformation, and brings hundreds of visitors every weekend has, I believe, put us on the map.
Each weekend we see bike and/or car clubs, showing off their vintage Mustangs, Harleys, or Volkswagens and it’s a crawl through the main street to get past the onlookers and happy snappers taking pictures of the amazing array of cars. Without turning this into a blog about Rick’s, I have to tell you their burgers are to die for!
For those of you interested in the stats, below is a snapshot from CoreLogic:
- Population approx 5,500
- 73% owner occupied dwellings
- Median sales price as of March 2016 was $403,000
- Capital growth during 2015 was less than that of the Sunshine Coast as a whole, at 1%
I think the future for Palmwoods is great - we have a new town centre planned plus a large unit development approved, both of which I’m sure will drive further interest in our little hinterland town.
