Melbourne's Inner North: The origins of VFL/AFL football

When the Victorian Football League was formed in 1896 it mostly centred, around clubs in Melbourne's Inner Northern suburbs and the game has grown in 2016 into an 18 team national competition.

In 1896, Melbourne's Inner Northern suburbs, were predominately blue-collared, industrial suburbs, whilst today in 2016, many white-collared people live there in what is now viewed as, prime real estate with average median house prices over $1 million.

The following suburbs are locations, where many current and ex AFL/VFL clubs, traditional home grounds are found:


Victoria Park, the former home of the Collingwood Football Club, is located in Abbotsford. The club played here until 1999 and the ground is still used by its VFL team, it was also home to Fitzroy briefly in the 1980's. The average median prices in Abbotsford are*:

Princes Park (AKA Ikon Park), is the training facility for the Carlton Football Club, which is located in Carlton North. The club played games here until 2005, as well as being the former home for Carlton, it was also used by Hawthorn, Fitzroy and the Western Bulldogs for various periods. The MCG, one of Australia's most iconic sporting stadiums is located in East Melbourne. The ground has been the home of the Melbourne Football Club, since 1858 (prior to the formation of the VFL), it is also currently home for Richmond, Collingwood, Hawthorn and Carlton, as well as being the former homes to North Melbourne and Essendon, plus the now defunct University Football Club. The average median prices in East Melbourne are*:

Brunswick Street Oval (AKA WT Peterson Community Oval) is located in Fitzroy North, it was the home of the former Fitzroy Lions Football Club until 1966 and is used today by the Fitzroy Reds Football Club (who are an amateur club playing in the VAFL). Arden Street Oval (AKA North Melbourne Cricket Ground) is located in North Melbourne. The ground is the training facility for the North Melbourne Football Club and AFL/VFL matches were played here until 1985. The average median prices in North Melbourne are*:
