Kelmscott is located approximately 23 kilometres south east of the Perth CBD along the Albany Highway. It is apart of the City of Armadale council. The suburb area is roughly 16 square kilometres in size.

Kelmscott suburb is divided by the Canning River. The western side of the river is home to the flat coastal plain whereupon most of Perth is situated. This area features the Stargate Kelmscott and Kelmscott Village shopping precincts along Albany Highway, Kelmscott Senior High School, the light industrial area, and a residential area. To the east side, the suburb extends into the western Darling Ranges.

The population of Kelmscott has grown from 9,407 in 2006 to 10,032 by 2011, showing a population growth of 6.6% in the area during this time. In the area, the predominant age group is 0-14 years old and households are primarily couples with children.
